2005年9月27日，刚刚成立的英国皇家特许语言学家学会（Chartered Institute of Linguists）授予英国翻译协会（Institute of Translation and Interpreting -ITI）主席、欧洲议会成员Diana Wallis第一荣誉会员称号。颁证仪式在英国伦敦的外国和英联邦事务办公室举行，皇家特许语言学家学会的监护人肯特郡迈克亲王出席了仪式。
Diana Wallis在颁证仪式上发表了讲话，内容如下：

　　"能够成为注册语言学家首名荣誉会员，我深感荣幸，同时也倍觉惭愧。在我从事律师职业以及从政的生涯中，语言一直在我生活中占较大比重，但我决不会自诩为一名职业语言学家。因此，我接受这一荣誉是与我作为英国翻译协会主席的身份相符的，是代表我们协会里所有职业语言学家的。对于皇家特许语言学家学会和英国翻译协会的成员而言，获得皇家特许代表我们取得了长足的进步，充分说明翻译职业终于获得了应有的认可。我们两个组织在这一关键的时刻应该携手共进。

　　我作为律师，现在又作为一名欧洲政治家，长期以来一直使用语言服务。我太了解语言学家们没有获得适当的认可和评价；皇家特许使我们向这一目标靠近了一步。"

Diana Wallis Member of the European Parliament and President of the UK based Institute of Translation and Interpreting is today (27th September 2005) being awarded the first Honorary Member of the newly formed Chartered Institute of Linguists. The award takes place in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London, England and the Chartered Institute's patron His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent will present the award.
