三、 表达恰当Appropriacy (renders text appropriately)
提交的译文是否能够让读者获得原文所提供的信息，词语是否便于读者理解、语法是否不构成阅读羁绊、逻辑是否正确引导读者，这是翻译质量的基本衡量标准。
1. 词语达意expressiveness
原文：Chou was a quiet and thoughtful man, even a little shy as he welcomed his visitors, urged them to be seated and to tell how he could help them.
译文：周恩来举止优雅，待人体贴，在招呼他们坐下，询问有何见教的时候，甚至还有些腼腆。
这里没有充分挖掘出关键词语“urge”所具有的“急切地鼓励”这一内涵，另外，“询问有何见教”也不足以表达“urged them to tell how he could help them”所体现的热情。再有就是“quiet”与“优雅”似乎还是有点差别。
改译：周恩来举止沉稳，待人体贴，在热情招呼他们就座、表示随时乐意效劳的时候，甚至还有些腼腆。
原文：A desire to throw over reality a light that never was might give way abruptly to the desire on the part of what we might consider a novelist-scientist to record exactly and concretely the structure and texture of a flower.
译文：这是一种照亮现实的欲望，此欲望从来就不会唐突的取代后面的那种欲望，后者是我们可以将其部分的理解为一个兼任小说家和科学家的人想要去准确并具体的记录下一朵花的结构和文理的那种意义上的欲望。
“throw over reality a light that never was”是成语“throw (a) light on/over”的扩展。“on the part of”是“regarding or with respect to”之意。译者断章取义，仅将单独字词简单组合起来，得出的翻译不能达意。
改译：以一种前所未有的方式解构现实的欲望，突然之间可能被另一种准确具体记载花草结构和纹理的欲望所取代，而这种欲望可能被认为是科普作家所特有的。
原文：These questions are political in the sense that the debate over them will inevitably be less an exploration of abstract matters in a spirit of disinterested inquiry than an academic power struggle in which the careers and professional fortunes of many women scholars--only now entering the academic profession in substantial numbers--will be at stake, and with them the chances for a distinctive contribution to humanistic understanding, a contribution that might be an important influence against sexism in our society.

原文中“and with them the chances for a distinctive contribution to humanistic understanding”是与“the careers and professional fortunes of many women scholars”并列的主语；“with them”中的“them”是指“the careers and professional fortunes”。译者没有把这种“皮之不存，毛将焉附”的意思体现出来。
另外一个小问题是，“sexism”被机械地翻译成“性别主义”，不够“性别歧视”达意。
改译：这些问题具有政治色彩，因为不可避免的是，关于这些问题的辩论与其说是本着中立精神对抽象事物进行的探索，不如说是学术影响力的较量。这场较量将使目前才开始大批进入学术界的女性学者中许多人的职业生涯和职业前景岌岌可危，同时她们为人文理解作出显著贡献的机会也难以预料，而这样的贡献可能对消除社会上的性别歧视带来重大影响。
2. 语法正确grammar
原文：Does there, I wonder, exist a being who has read all, or approximately all, that the person of average culture is supposed to have read, and that not to have read is a social sin?
译文：我在想，是否有人读完了一个有中等教养的人被认为应该读的所有书籍或几乎所有书籍？没有读完这些书籍是否是一种社会犯罪？
译者的问题在于将修饰“all”的后一个关系从句“that not to have read is a social sin”划归为“I wonder”的宾语从句。
改译：我在想，要读完了一个中等教养的人应当读完、不读完就是一种社会罪过的所有书籍，或几乎所有这样的书籍，到底有没有人能够做到？
3. 逻辑清晰logic
原文：These new observational capabilities would result in simply a mass of details were it not for the fact that theoretical understanding has reached the stage at which it is becoming possible to indicate the kind of measurements required for reliable weather forecasting.
译文：理论上的认识已达到了这样的阶段——现在已能指出需要哪种测量方式才能可靠地预报天气，如果做不到这一点，那么上述这些新的观察能力只不过提供了一大堆细节而已。
原文：Once intimidated by arguments that their children would feel more at home in bilingual classes，and that they might lose their heritage in regular classes，these women have since given voice，loudly and persuasively，to what they know from experience that unless they are fluent in the language of their adopted country，their children will never attend college or land any but the most menial of jobs.
译文：有人说，孩子们在双语课堂里会感到更加自由自在，而在正规班级会丧失其传统文化。这几位母亲曾被这一论点搞得惶恐不安，现在发表了最响亮，最有说服力的意见。从她们自身的经验中，他们深知：如果孩子们不熟练掌握他们所移居国家的语言，除了那些最简单的体力活儿外，根本谈不到上大学，也谈不到找到理想的工作。
这是一个在互联网上被当作翻译典范进行传播的句子，但最后部分的逻辑整理出现了混乱。原文“but the most menial of jobs”是仅从有待land的“any”中排除，而非从“attend college”中排除。
改译：这几名妇女曾经被这样的论调搞得惶恐不安：觉得孩子们在双语课堂里会感到更加自在，而在正规班级则可能丧失传统文化。但之后她们一直在大声疾呼，现身说法，宣扬孩子们只有精通所移居国家的语言，才有可能念上大学和找到稍微体面一点的工作。
原文：Inevitably, trade-offs are made——such as a lowering of mandated auto pollution standards for the immediate future against a raising of overall air quality requirements——and the degree to which long-term environmental considerations are taken into account usually depends upon the ability of environmental groups to bring their pressure to bear in the hearings.
译文：各方相互妥协是不可避免的——比如不全面实行气体质量的检测标准，放宽为只对机动车强制实行污染检测标准。对环保长期考虑的力度通常取决于各环保组织在听证会上施加的可承受压力的大小。
原译文破折号后面的半句话与原文相去甚远，暂且不说严重的信息错乱，光看译文似乎“不全面实行……”和“放宽……”都是妥协的做法。而实际上，两个破折号之间“against”两边是要折衷的两个方面。
改译：因此，作出妥协是不可避免的，比如，在近期内降低法定的汽车污染标准，以换取总体空气质量要求的提高。另外，长远的环保因素能够得到多大程度的重视，往往取决于各环保团体在听证会上施加压力的能力。
