For historical and political reasons, Canada has been a particularly fertile field for the growth of a vital community of language professionals. It was only natural that translators, terminologists and interpreters in the various provinces and territories should seek to join forces in associations to promote their profession. It was even more logical that these associations would look further to a coordinating body to represent the profession on a national and international level. That body is the Canadian Translators and Interpreters Council, commonly known as CTIC.

CTIC is governed by a Board largely made up of the presidents of the member bodies appointed to CTIC for one-year renewable terms. The Council elects the three-member Executive Committee for one-year terms, renewable twice. Each body has one vote on the Council. Committees may be established to conduct specific activities.
